MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION AGM REPORT by: Arlene Kirkpatrick

The Manitoba Angus Association’s Annual Meeting and banquet was held on January 8 th , 2011 at the Royal Oak Inn in Brandon, MB. There were a smaller number of members participating but there were some very good discussions and lots of decisions made about the direction the MAA will be taking in the upcoming year. The reports highlighted the activity of the board over the past year as they continue to promote Angus Cattle through feeder sales, field days, Gold Shows, 4-H tokens and news media.

Kajal Devani, Breed Development Coordinator for the CAA, was on hand to give us an update and highlights of the year in the CAA. She also answered many questions from the membership, about herd performance programs and genetic defects as well as leading the discussion on some topics requested by the CAA office such as mandatory registration of herd names, size of the CAA board, epd’s for Black/Red carriers and how to deal with illegible tattoos. This led to some good discussions and some recommendations to send back to the CAA board of Directors. The Manitoba Angus Association is looking forward to hosting both the CAA AGM in June at Elkhorn Resort & Spa near Clear Lake, Manitoba and also the National Angus Show in Brandon, in early November in conjunction with MLE.

The National Angus Show will be hosted by Manitoba Angus Assoc. this fall in conjunction with MLE and is just in the planning stages. Suggestions for Judges were presented at the AGM and the board would welcome anyone who would like to be involved and help with this event.

The new Manitoba Angus Association board of directors was named during the meeting.(President) Shawn Birmingham, (Vice –President) Dallas Johnston, Canadian Director by Acclamation – Lois McRae, Kent Topham, Alan Nykoliation, Doug Stamler, Dan VanSteelandt, Ron Batho, Larissa Hamilton and Arlene Kirkpatrick(Secretary/Treasurer). New 3 year Term Directors are Allan Nykoliation who was previously in a 1 year term and Shawn Birmingham for his second, 3 year term. Kent Topham returned in a 1 year term and the board is happy to welcome Larissa Hamilton in a 1 year term.

SPECIAL THANK YOU TO JEFF FRASER our retiring director for his input and help over the past year. The day finished up with an annual all-breeds banquet. The Manitoba Charolais, Limousin, Hereford and Simmental Associations joined the Manitoba Angus Association for a roast beef dinner, award presentations and a fun auction.

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION HONORARY PRESIDENT

I would like to thank the Manitoba Angus Association for the honor of receiving the Honorary Presidents Pin which I feel must be shared with my wife Pauline and our son Michael, who without their help at home, I couldn’t have spent the time away that the Angus activities demanded. I have to acknowledge my parents Mona and Clayton Canning who provided a solid base of Angus cattle to work with and instilling in me the importance of genetic testing.

I have been involved with Angus for many years, first helping on the farm, then through 4-H, having shown the Grand Champion 4-H steer, an Angus at the Brandon Fair way back in 1967. In the 1970s I was involved with the Manitoba Angus, serving as President, and as a director. In 1997 I was privileged to be nominated as a director of the Canadian Angus Association. Then again in 2003, I served as a director and in 2006 was elected president of the Canadian Angus Association. What has been accomplished by the Canadian Angus Association has been truly amazing, from the launch of the first website in 1998, to being able to access pedigrees and genetic information at the touch of a button, any time, day or night. The board of directors, in 1997 where involved in the various committees, and quite often in some of the day to day activities of the Association. Today the Canadian Director’s roles have changed significantly. This has allowed the directors to be visionaries with their job now to map out the future of the Canadian Angus Association and the Angus breed in Canada.

A few of the highlights over the years that seem to stand out are: Receiving the purebred Manitoba Angus breeder of the year 2004, receiving the Vandale award 2003, The recognition in 1997 by being nominated for the Beef Improvement Federation of North America, but most of all, seeing the steady improvement of our Angus cow herd. Prairielane’s cow herd average exceeds the top 25% for weaning, yearling, and total maternal when compared to the North American cow herd. Also the selling of females to Rawburn Angus, and having their offspring being well received in the UK.

But most rewarding of all was being able to meet so many great Angus breeders from all across Canada. Seeing the diversity and the similarities from region to region and how well the Angus cow has adapted. No matter what part of Canada she calls home.

Sincerely
Blaine Canning

January 9, 2010 - Manitoba Angus Association’s Annual Meeting and Banquet, was held January 9, 2010 in Brandon Manitoba, where a review of the 2009 Year was highlighted by the World Angus Forum event in Canada.

A good crowd was on hand for the afternoon meeting, where the committees gave their reports on the successful year the Manitoba Angus Association experienced, inspite of the challenges faced by the beef industry. The Association has worked hard over the past year promoting Angus Cattle at the Manitoba Display at the World Angus Forum in Calgary, through 4-H awards, junior shows and events, Green Tagged Angus Feeder Sales, Summer Gold Show along with our Fall Gold, Fall Keystone Sale and their Manitoba Angus Outlook Newsletter.

Doug Fee, Canadian Angus CEO from Calgary, addressed the members highlighting the success of the World Angus Forum in 2009, the Canadian Angus Ranchers Endorsement Beef Program and some of the new and upcoming programs that will be offered in the New Year.

During the meeting Round table groups worked on the Angus Green tag Program, Canadian Angus Ranchers Endorsement Program, Promotion and Advertising of the Angus Breed. Many new ideas came out of these sessions for the new Board of Directors to work on.

The new Manitoba Angus Board of Directors was named during the meeting. The Board is as follows: Shawn Birmingham (President), Dallas Johnston (Vice-President), Lois McRae (Canadian Director), Megan Kemp(Junior Director), Kent Topham, Allan Nykoliation, Doug Stamler, Ron Batho, Dan VanSteelandt, Jeff Fraser and Arlene Kirkpatrick (Secretary/Treasurer). New three Year Term Directors- Dan VanSteelandt and Dallas Johnston . New Two Year term Director – Ron Batho

New One year Term Directors- Allan Nykoliation and Jeff Fraser.

SPECIAL THANKS TO ALANA VANSTEELANT, TIM BAKER AND RYAN SHEARER our retiring directors for all their help over the past years.

The day wrapped up with an annual all-breeds banquet. The Manitoba Hereford, Limousin, Simmental and Charolais Associations joined the Manitoba Angus Association for a roast beef dinner and presentation by Tod Wallace of Manitoba Agriculture on the Grow Safe System which tracks feed intake, efficiency and health on livestock. A great time was had by all and a huge “hats off” goes to all who supported the event through donations, and purchasing of auction items

Stewart Cattle Co. Manitoba Angus Association Purebred Breeder of the Year 2009 (Van Daele award)

Pictured L to R; Shawn Birmingham, Manitoba President, Brent, Kelsey and Dale Stewart

Manitoba Angus is pleased to announce Stewart Cattle Co. of Russell, Manitoba as the Purebred Breeder of the year for 2009.

Brent, Dale & Kelsey Stewart operate a 110 purebred Angus and 65 commercial cowherd.

In February the Stewart’s successfully held their first annual Bull and commercial female sale.

In June they brought a string of Angus cattle to Treherne, Manitoba for our Summer Gold Show. At this show they were awarded Breeder’s herd champion bull, reserve champion female and champion yearling heifer.

In July they took a display herd to the World Angus Forum in Spruce Meadows. The quality of Angus cattle they try to produce was evident at this world-class show as they captured the Intermediate yearling champion Bull.

Also in July an Angus cross steer raised by the Stewart’s was a division champion at the Calgary Stampede. In addition to this the steer was the reserve champion carcass steer. In the Angus Breed carcass quality is what we have been promoting along with all the other good things about our breed.

At our Fall Gold Show the Stewart’s received Reserve Heifer Calf champion, Champion female, Junior champion bull, Senior champion bull, Grand champion bull, and Champion Pair of bulls, Breeder’s Herd, Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder.

They also had Reserve Grand Champion bull at Farmfair in Edmonton along with a very successful Agribition with their bull SCC Right Time making it into the Top 10 of the RBC Supreme Challenge….Quite a Feat.

The Stewarts in addition to consigning cattle to our Association sale, The Keystone Klassic, they also supplied the fundraising heifer for out Provincial Association.

Perhaps more important than all the show ring success is their extremely strong support of the Junior Programs. They sponsored The Canadian Junior Angus Showdown, the Junior Show at the Manitoba Livestock Expo and the Junior Beef Extreme at the Canadian Western Agribition. I believe that their Junior Support is just as important because without the Juniors, there will be no one left to carry on things not only with Angus but all Breeds.

Manitoba is pleased to have dedicated breeders like Stewart Cattle Co, involved in the Angus Breed.

The Bray Family - Manitoba Angus Association Commercial Producers of the Year 2009

Manitoba Angus Association is pleased to announce that Kelly and Leah Bray and Family, are the 2009 winners of our Commercial Producer of the Year award. The Brays along with their children: Nicholas, Devin, Nathan and Lauren and Kelly’s Parents George and Sylvia operate their cow calf ranch in the Eddystone area. Their herd consists of 300 cows with 60 replacement heifers to ensure a young cowherd. Presently 16 Black Angus bulls are turned out on the 1 st of June to insure 10 th of March calving.

Throughout the summer mature cows graze on Native pasture while the young cows graze on tame rotational pastures and native grasses. In the fall, the Angus cross calves

Are weaned and are back grounded until the end of January when they are then sold. Each year Kelly and Nicholas along with George’s wisdom see that 8 to 4 Black Angus Bulls are purchased to continue adding new genetics and to keep the bull pen young.
